Harry Tanfield delivered a remarkable performance to finish fifth in the men’s time trial at the British Road Championship.
The 22-year-old, from Great Ayton, clocked 58min 52.06sec on the 44.4km course on the Isle of Man on Thursday.
Steve Cummings, of World Tour outfit Dimension Data, clinched the title in 57:18.66, ahead of Movistar’s five-time champion Alex Dowsett (57:27.10).
JLT Condor’s James Gullen, who was second in the colours of Pedal Heaven last season, completed the podium places with his time of 58:09.45.
The only other rider to get the better of Tanfield was another from the World Tour ranks – Team Sky’s Tao Geoghegan-Hart (58:45.74).
As if the display was not impressive enough, Tanfield’s result was made all the more remarkable by the fact he has only had a few days to familiarise himself with the Canyon Speedmax bike.
The Yorkshireman faced a race against time to hone his set-up and position ahead of the championships on the Isle of Man.
Meanwhile, Tanfield’s BIKE Channel Canyon team-mate Max Stedman finished 19th in the under-23 time trial competition.
Scott Davies clinched his fourth national jersey with a time of 28:20.33 on the 22.2km course, which was one lap of the senior parcours.
Tom Baylis was second in 29:09.99, while Charlie Tanfield – Harry’s brother – was third (29:11.26). Stedman clocked 31:07.12 for his effort.
Claire Rose, of Visit Dallas DNA Pro Cycling, won the women’s event, which was raced over the same distance as the under-23s.
She clocked 32:11.32 to beat Hannah Barnes, of Canyon SRAM, into second place by 19sec, with Team WNT’s Katie Archibald (32:36.19) third.
The women’s under-23 jersey went to Anna Christian, of Drops. Her time of 34:13.77 was too good for Team Breeze’s Mel Lowther (34:27.39) with Alice Barnes (34:31.15) completing the podium.
