Caleb Ewan sprinted to glory in Aldeburgh after Harry Tanfield spent a second day up the road in the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.
Tanfield, who starred in the breakaway on stage three, escaped with another six riders on the 186km dash from Newmarket to the Suffolk seaside town.
That was after Rory Townsend had been prominent in the early skirmishes, only to see his best efforts to get away scuppered by a nervous peloton.
Tanfield, 22, was active in all three Eisberg sprints and the sole Skoda king of the mountains climb during the sixth stage of the UCI 2.HC battle.
He bagged two third places, was narrowly edged out in the sprint at Stradbroke and finished second to Lotto Soudal’s James Shaw on the KOM at Snape as he earned his team more priceless time in front of the ITV cameras.
The Yorkshireman, who sprinted to seventh spot on stage four and took a stunning 14th in the time trial yesterday, eventually waved the white flag with around 7km to go.
The remainder of the break attempted to hold on but were swallowed up with 3km left, prompting a counter-attack from Movistar’s Alex Dowsett.
His move came to nothing, though, and as Lotto NL Jumbo successfully defended Lars Boom’s leader’s jersey, Ewan prevailed in the bunch kick.
The Aussie, from Orica-Scott, easily held of Quick-Step Floors sprinter Fernando Gaviria, with Boom’s team-mate Dylan Groenewegen completing the podium places.
Tanfield’s team-mate Townsend, recovered from his early digs, produced a strong ride to hold his position in the front group and crossed the line in 27th position.
Jacob Scott, of An Post Chain Reaction, and JLT Condor’s Graham Briggs maintained their leads in the Eisberg sprints and Skoda KOM competitions.
Alexander Kristoff, who was fourth on the stage, now leads the points classification, with Geraint Thomas retaining his position as the best British rider.
