Harry Tanfield sprinted to a brilliant second place behind Arvid de Kleijn in the UCI 1.2 Antwerpse-Havenpijl in Belgium on Sunday.
With the team active thoughout the under-25 contest in Merksem, the Great Ayton talent managed to escape with 10 riders towards the sharp end.
Having used a group of four, including Mitchell Webber, as a springboard, those escapees soon swelled to 20, with Sam Lowe and Rory Townsend bridging across.
A crash put paid to Lowe’s hopes as the peloton ramped up the chase and began eating into the advantage of the remaining break.
And that gap had fallen to just 40 seconds when Tanfield hit out again, alongside Baby-Dump’s de Kleijn, Arjen Livyns, of Pauwels Sauzen Vastgoedservice, Team Differdange Losch’s Cristian Raileanu and Brit Jacob Scott, from An Post Chain Reaction.
And the quintet worked superbly together, stretching their lead before fighting it out in a sprint finish where Tanfield had the legs to beat all but de Kleijn.
Livyns completed the podium positions, with Scott having to settle for the fifth place. Robin Lowik was next home, 31 seconds adrift. Webber finished 69th at 1min 5sec.
The result follows up Townsend’s second in the Midden-Brabant Poort Omloop and Chris Opie‘s third in the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire as the team’s third UCI podium finish.
Dexter Gardias has also finished second and third in the mountains classifications at the Tour de Yorkshire and An Post Rás, while both he and Tanfield won combativity jerseys in the former.
On Saturday, Matt Nowell finished 67th in Dwars door het Hageland after a puncture in the final 20km of the UCI 1.1 contest hampered his hopes.
Nowell was the only member of the BIKE Channel Canyon squad to finish the gruelling 194km battle on mixed terrain. Among the casualties was Opie, who was forced out with a broken wheel after hitting a pothole.
